How are (jewellery) rings made?

Metal Casting
stuntdouble_uk asked:

I’m trying to find out how custom made metal rings are produced. Is the molten metal poured into a cast/mould or is a line of the metal allowed to cool and then twisted into a circular shape, then smoothed/filed down and polished? Any info appreciated…

  • i just made an engagement ring. I got a wax tube from a jewellry store, its got a hole in it like a ring. you use thise special carver thing to dig out the middle to the size you want then you carve the wax on the outside to look like you want. then you take it to a caster and they make a mold from your wax. then you can get the ring made from the mold in whatever metal you want. i made a silver one first to make sure it looked ok, it only cost like 15 bucks or something. the mold was like less then 10 i think. when i eventually cast it in gold it was like 250.
