How to get epoxy out of a mould?

Metal Casting
Lucas asked:

I need to cast some epoxy using a metal mould. I have some serious difficulties removing the epoxy once it has cured. I have tried coating the metal with silicone oil, hair spray and Teflon (PTFE) spray. Nothing has helped. What should I use to coat the metal surface in order to easily remove the cast epoxy part?

  • Better would be a two piece mold. The substance you’re using is designed to bond to anything, and in its cure process likely is reducing any effectiveness of the coatings you’ve tried as release agenst.

I do have a suggestion however. It may be a tedious search, but could give you some ideas, from manufacturers of Molded Resin Products, so common today, even down to animal statues sold in dollar stores.

The best solution is make a cast of the metal piece using the silicone or latex based mold making supplies. Using this new rubber mold, you can then give it a coating or cornstarch or baby powder and then pour in your epoxy and the cast should come right out. Even if it doesn’t, you can peel away the rubber and the piece will look great anyways. I have tested this stuff out a lot and this is what works although it is frustrating not to be able to do it just once rather than having to create it twice. Well worth the effort to have a good quality piece. Just remember to tap the epoxy down to get out any air bubbles before it sets cause then you will have to do it again.
