Hot metal is still hot-M & H Type Foundry & Letterpress Tour
The venerable firm of Mackenzie & Harris, established in 1915, is the oldest and largest type foundry for letterpress printers in the United States. Also known as M & H Type, it offers traditional lead typecasting and Monotype composition as well as hot metal fonts. This tour, part of an A&E Open Book show, takes viewers through the foundry and into the pressroom of Arion Press where the type is impressed into paper. The tour features an interview with Lewis Mitchell, who has been casting type at M & H for over 50 years. This is part two of the show; the first part can be viewed at: www.youtube.com For more information about M & H Type see: www.arionpress.com

Science and Engineering of Casting Solidification
Product Description
Casting of metals evolved first as witchcraft, gradually became an art, then technology, and became only recently a science. Many of the processes used in a metal casting are still empirical in nature, but many others are deeply rooted in mathematics. In whatever form, casting of metals is an activity fundamental in the very existence of our world, as we know it today.
Foundry reports indicate that solidification modeling is not only a cost-effective investment but also a major technical asset. It helps foundries move into markets with more complex and technically demanding work. However, to the best of the author’s knowledge, there have been no attempts to synthesize the information that can be used for engineering calculations pertinent to computational modeling of casting solidification.
This book is based on the author’s thirty years of experience with teaching, research and the industrial practice of solidification science as applied to casting processes. It is an attempt to describe solidification theory through the complex mathematical apparatus that includes partial differential equations and numerical analysis, which are required for a fundamental treatment of the problem. The mathematics, however, is restricted to the element essential to attain a working knowledge of the field. This is in line with the main goal of the book, which is to educate the reader in the fast moving area of computational modeling of solidification of casting. For the sake of completeness, a special effort has been made to introduce the reader to the latest developments in solidification theory, even if the reader has no engineering applications at this time.
The text is designed to be self-contained. The author’s teaching experience demonstrates that some of the students interested in solidification science are not fully proficient in partial differential equations (PDE) and/or numerical analysis. Accordingly, elements of PDE and numerical analysis, required to obtain a working knowledge of computational solidification modeling, have been introduced in the text while attempting to avoid the interruption of the fluency of the subject. Numerous modeling and calculation examples using the Excel spreadsheet as an engineering tool are provided. The book is addressed to graduate students and seniors in solidification science, as well as to industrial researchers who work in the field of solidification in general and casting modeling in particular.

BURNOUT OVEN DIGITAL CONTROL 120 VOLT
Product Description
Insulated with space-age ceramic fiber for fast heating and cooling at low electrical cost. The firing chamber is 13″ W x 13″ D x 9″ H (33 x 33 x 23 cm), large enough for volume jewelry making. These kilns fire to 1700 F (967 C), so you can also use them for low-fire ceramics, enameling on metal, china painting or glass fusing. A heavy steel case protects the firing chamber for long life and the chamber is supported by a double-layer steel bottom. The base lifts the furnace off the work surface. The door peephole and top vent-hole are sealed with metal covers when not in use. The door remains tightly sealed, even at high temperature, with the spring-loaded latch. Reaches 1000 F (538 C) in 30 minutes. The digital control models use the DTC-800 controller, eliminating the need for a pyrometer. With this feature-packed temperature controller, you can program up to eight ramps (raising or lowering the temperature at the rate you specify) and eight dwells (holding the temperature at the rate you specify) and eight dwells (holding the temperature constant for the length of time you specify). The digital models use a type-K thermocouple, long proven for it’s reliability. The controller stores up to six programs even if the power shuts off. The furnace has a one year warranty. The controller has a two year warranty. Can be shipped UPS. Shipping weight 108 lbs. (49 kg). This unit requires a 20 amp dedicated line. Contact us for 220 volt model.
