Expert Advice for Buying Cast Iron Radiators
Expert Advice for Buying Cast Iron Radiators
Cast iron radiators can represent a significant investment for homeowners. It is a good idea to get as much help as possible when buying cast iron radiators to make sure you are making the most of your money.
Common Pitfalls
Expert advice can help you to avoid the common pitfalls associated with buying cast iron radiators. This can include:
* Leaks – this is a major problem for anyone buying new or reclaimed cast iron radiators. In most cases you will not know you have a fault in your radiators until they are plumbed in. You need to make sure the company/seller you are buying from can offer you a guarantee. This should replace any cast iron radiators that leak with a new and fully working one. Ideally you should also use companies that can provide their own testing facilities. These use pressure tests to ensure the radiators do not leak before they go on sale.
]]>
* Rust – cast iron radiators can be prone to rusting. This can occur when the protective finish on the radiator has been damaged. Check radiators thoroughly for rust, chips and other damage before you install them. Cast iron radiators can be repaired but this can cost money to do properly.
* Sediment – cast iron radiators can build up sediment. This means before you install your radiators you need to thoroughly flush them through. This is particularly important if you are using reclaimed antique radiators. By flushing through radiators you can avoid getting any sediment into your heating system which could cause a lot of damage.
* Incorrect Size – it is a good idea to get a plumber or heating expert to help you work out the right size radiators for your rooms. Cast iron radiators are very efficient as they retain heat extremely well. This means that even after you have turned your system off they can continue to provide heat to your rooms whilst they are slowly cooling down. It is very important to have the right size radiators otherwise you will be overheating rooms or under-heating them.
* Heating System – is your heating system appropriate for running cast iron radiators? If it isn’t then you may need a new boiler as well. This can start getting expensive so before you invest in cast iron radiators make sure you get an expert to check over your whole heating system. They will be able to advise you on whether any parts need updating before you install your new cast iron radiators.
* Modern Reproduction Radiators – reproduction cast iron radiators can be a more affordable option. However you will need to make sure you are buying them from an experienced and reliable company. Some reproduction cast iron radiators can be inferior in quality to the authentic antique versions. Make sure you use a company that has a good reputation and customer satisfaction record.
Expert advice can help you to avoid the common pitfalls when buying cast iron radiators. This type of heating can be expensive so it makes sense to get as much help as possible before you shop around.

Cast Iron Bathtubs Are Exquisitely Sublime!
Cast Iron Bathtubs Are Exquisitely Sublime!
For many, the bathtub is just a place to take a bath, an oasis when you need to soak your body in hot water to relieve stress or a headache, and of course, a drain for the water showering down from above. All these things are valid, but what about those times when you’re not using the tub? What about the times you do? Chances are your bathroom is decorated in a lovely pastel of your favorite and most relaxing trinkets and pictures. Your walls are adorned with towel racks and on those racks are aesthetically pleasing towels, but your tub may not be so aesthetically exciting right? Imagine now, if you will, cast iron bathtubs. How would one of these lovely tubs look in your bathroom?
For years people have done everything they could to make their bathroom look amazing. After all, when company comes over where do they often go at least once? The beauty of cast iron bathtubs is that they solve all the needs of the perfect bathroom in one unit. The cast iron tub is gorgeous, often trimmed with beautiful accents and you can even get a clawfoot cast iron tub as well if you really want to impress people- and yourself!
A tub should be deep as well as wide, big enough for you to lay in it head to toe without having to touch the top or bottom if you don’t wish (to float essentially). It should be wide enough to do the same to some degree, but more so to give your arms room to spread out and relax. The tub should “feel” like it’s important, in that when you’re in it you feel you’re in a foundation capable of holding the water and keeping it’s temperature the same. One lovely thing about cast iron bathtubs are it’s ability to hold the water temperature better than say acrylic or plastic materials. When you grip onto the side of the tub, it’s a lot more exciting when the tub has that warm rigid feel to it, but smooth and polished as these tubs often are.
Cast iron is heavy and isn’t for every home, especially upstairs homes with older foundations that aren’t reinforced rigidly. Most homes however can accommodate a cast iron tub but you should make sure the tub is not too heavy if your in an older home, or if termites may be an issue, this will be the first thing to fall through the floor!

The Advantage Of Using Cast Iron Guttering To Collect Rain Water
The Advantage Of Using Cast Iron Guttering To Collect Rain Water
You can find anything you like on the internet and if you just type in the word rainwater you will come across many articles about whether it is safe to drink.
Considering half the world lives in a climate where the scarcity of water means that rain is always collected as it falls and without hesitation drunk, it is surprising to read some comments about the possible dangers of drinking it. Of course the doubters all live in affluent cities and probably do not even drink tap water but buy expensive bottled water instead.
Some people collect water from rain that falls on the roofs of their houses and passes along their cast iron guttering into a vat or barrel. The question of whether this is drinkable is presumably just one of necessity or not. In some countries like for example England, it is almost irresponsible not to have a barrel collecting water from the downpipe of the cast iron gutters if there is a garden to be watered.
Occasionally there is such a lack of summer rain that a hose pipe ban is declared which may last for weeks. At this point the gardener with his forethought will have a huge tub of water for watering his garden. All this water collected previously from the flow along the cast iron guttering of his house will now come in very handy to save his flowerbeds.
If the hose pipe ban stays for more than a week or two then water authorities in England use helicopters to identify any suspiciously green lawns in towns and cities. This draconian attitude is a big deterrent to anyone thinking of sneaking out in the middle of the night whilst his neighbours are asleep and watering his lawn with a hose connected to a house tap.
Fines can be enormous when the officials from the water authority come knocking at the door. If however, you can prove that the only reason your garden looks greener than anyone else’s is because you had the foresight to collect barrels of water by collecting rain water from the downpipe of your cast iron gutters then you should be let off.
As it happens, many gardeners use the water from their guttering system all year round whether there is a water ban or not. Since the privatisation of water companies in England there are several independent suppliers covering several regions. Some of these companies charge a set quarterly rate and others insist on a water meter. Any keen gardener with a meter can save himself a lot of money by using all the rainwater he can collect. This practice of collecting gutter water is going to increase dramatically because of the combination of escalating water prices and also the fact that it has just been announced by the government that every house without exception will have to be fitted with a water meter by the end of next year.

Painting cast iron radiators
Painting cast iron radiators
So you have sourced some wonderful reclaimed cast iron radiators, or you want to refurbish your Victorian period radiators, but what is the best way of bringing them back to their former glory? What is the best way of painting cast iron radiators?
Below are a few tips to achieving a stunning yet hard-wearing finish on cast iron radiators.
1. DON’T power coat!
Some companies offer a powder coating service on cast iron radiators. This method can produce a fabulous finish, BUT… cast iron radiators are not designed to go through the high oven temperatures and prolonged baking process involved in powder coating. Many experts advise against this option as there is a very real risk that the seals between sections will be damaged during baking which will lead to leaking radiators. For this reason, powder coating will invalidate the manufacturer’s guarantee on modern cast iron radiators.
2. DO use cellulose or acrylic based paint
There is no need to use expensive specialist radiator paints. You can achieve a perfect finish using cellulose-based paint or acrylic-based spray paint. For instance, car paint is perfect for radiators as it is designed to cope with extremes of temperature and be tough enough to withstand relatively intense wear and tear. If you like the look of powder coating, then a similar looking end result can be achieved by using products like “Plasti-kote”, a spray paint available from many DIY stores.
3. DON’T use water based paint
If you use water based paint on cast iron you will almost certainly end up with orange “rust blooms”. Some “specialist” radiator paint is water based and even has a picture of a cast iron radiator on the tin but use this at your peril!
4. DO spray paint rather than brush paint
Cast iron’s textured finish is forgiving, so a good paint finish is easily achievable. If you are planning on painting the radiators yourself by hand, then we recommend using spray paint as it is difficult to reach into the middle columns and achieve a consistent finish using a brush.

Why Cast Iron Fireplace Surrounds Are Still So Popular
Why Cast Iron Fireplace Surrounds Are Still So Popular
In England, the Victorian period endured from the mid 1830s to the start of the 1900s. During this time society underwent a good deal of change. Mass production was spreading quickly and people in the middle class enjoyed being able to purchase a wider variety of products than ever before in the history of the country. The English middle class was now thriving and the use of new materials such as cast iron quickly became very popular. Many things were being made of cast iron during this time by pouring molten iron into a sand mould. Cast iron was a very popular and trendy material that helped to shape the Victorian design era. Most new homes at that time had cast iron fences installed outside and often had benches, lawn furniture and railings made out of this heavy and very durable material.
It was also the case that many of the new Victorian houses being built were fitted with cast iron fireplace surrounds which became the centrepiece of the home. These fireplace surrounds were often built onto the fireplace in the living area of the home as well as to the hearths in the main bedrooms to provide a modern, new look and long-lasting warmth during the chilly months of the year. Many of the older, existing homes during this era had stone fireplaces inside that were designed to burn wood and coal. These fireplaces were often framed with decorative surrounds that were made of wood, slate or stone. It was a trend at the time to replace these outdated surrounds with the new and more modern cast iron variety as it was seen as a status symbol among the middle class to own an hearth made of this new material that was sweeping the land.
Today, the charm and popularity of cast iron fireplace surrounds is alive and very well in large cities and small towns alike. Old cast iron surrounds are routinely being recovered from ageing homes by companies who make it their business to refurbish originaliron surrounds. Cast iron kitchen sinks
Cast iron kitchen sinks
Cast iron kitchen sinks gain the next position to stainless steel sinks in terms of popularity. These sinks are durable, heavy, easily maintained and offer the special attraction which you will not get in stainless steel sinks, the variety of color. Cast iron was most widely used material for sinks in the last century till stainless steel replaced them gradually.
Cast iron is an alloy metal consisting of 95% or more iron, 2.1%-4% and 1%-3% silicon. Cast iron is brittle but when refined to use in sinks last for long years if you maintain them properly. A porcelain coating is laid over the cast iron, known as ‘enamel’, when used in making sinks. This enamel coat comes in various colors and protects the cast iron sink from scratch, corrosion, and breakage. This enamel coat is what we see when look at the sinks and they render the colorful glossy appearance to the basin. This layer if broken, underlying layer of cast iron will be damaged.
Cast iron kitchen sinks have both plus points and drawbacks. These sinks are made up of heavy material and glossy coating, so they protected from cracking and denting. They have long durability and serve your kitchen throughout whole life if you maintain properly. The enamel coat comes in abundant colors apart from white and black and has appealing finish. The glossy surface does not get water spots or stain and easy to maintain.
However, the enamel coating may get damaged by abrasive material, harsh detergents and eventually become porous, holds stains and corrodes. Gradually, underlying layer of cast iron will be exposed and once the layer is open, the sink is no safer to use. The exposed cast iron layer will corrode and break up easily by the harsh action of cleaners, forceful bang up by heavy utensils etc. the method of installing under-mount sinks require many aids due to their heavy weight.
You will get variations in the color, bowl or basin number, flat rim or self-rim, and under-counter or over-mounting style of the cast iron kitchen sinks. Over or top-counter sinks are easier to install than the under-counter sinks. Kohler and CECO are two famous companies who have different specialized cast iron sink designs for various needs. You must check the faucet-hole position and number before buying a cast iron sink, because it is not easy to drill the sink after installing. Get the holes done by some expert before installing them.
