Radiators ? Why Cast Iron?

Radiators ? Why Cast Iron?

While there are any number of people out there who will follow the trends no matter what they dictate, keeping up with The Joneses is not necessarily for everyone. Some people prefer time-worn style over fleeting fashion, and will want to model their houses according to their own unique tastes, not the current flavour of the month in different interior design magazines.

For those who want a more timeless look to their house, focussing on classic design rather than artistic expression, when it comes to bathrooms there is more to creating the perfect look than simply finding a Victorian style tub. One of the focal points to any truly unique bathroom will be the radiator.

Cast iron bathroom radiators are much more ornate and attractive than your normal run of the mill radiators, giving you much more scope to find a design that is just right for you.

However the benefits of these beautiful bathroom radiators don’t just end with their looks. While they will be much more stylish than most other types of radiator, they are also actually much more economical and efficient. They will heat bathrooms evenly and thoroughly which certain other styles will not be able to do. They are also surprisingly low cost and also cheap to run. Cast iron’s density means that it is much more efficient at storing heat than other types of radiator and will continue to radiate heat for a long time after the heating has been switched off.

Their use will also help to reduce condensation while gently warming the room rather than aggressively filling it with heat. For those who want to combine classic looks with a practical way to provide heat, there really isn’t any better option. And when the latest trend is yesterday’s news your bathroom will still look as stylish as ever.

Wrought Iron Railings for Home or Office

Wrought Iron Railings for Home or Office

The beauty and durability of wrought iron railings has been proven over many centuries of use. Its history began in the middle ages when foundries across Europe used various methods to form the malleable metal. The fact that it is durable which and will give instead of breaking, like cast iron, give it the properties needed for the uses found. Balconies, handrails, ornate gates, or entry doors have been fashioned of wrought iron.

The uses of the metal call for a vast array of design possibilities. Ornate structures that serve both as a door, for instance, as a coat of arms. The strength of the metal gave it the ability to be used as a fortress against attackers. To this day, it is a respected part of a security fence system in some of the finest homes across the world.

While there are no more producers of wrought iron, there are still companies who form beautiful iron gates or other products using old scrap iron, which is enough to meet the demand. Restoring authentic historic buildings often require the use of the metal.

Modern uses of wrought iron include railings, beds, wine racks, furniture, tables, doors, table lamps, mirrors and of course, gates. Prices may vary quite a bit, depending on the amount of artistic details and the fame of the artist being hired to fabricate the work desired. The more ornate, the more time is needed but custom orders may offer a unique beauty, at a price, of course. Wrought iron railings offer the quality of being fashioned along a winding staircase in graceful curves accentuating the shape of the stairs. This promotes an elegant architecture in large homes or government buildings with plenty of space.

The durability of iron is without question. It will easily last a lifetime needing only a paint job every 3 or 4 years. When an iron fence is set outside in concrete, there is often more problems with the settling ground and worn concrete instead of the iron. With some cleaning, new concrete can be poured using the same wrought iron fence. While dismantled, the iron could be sandblasted, primed and painted as desired.

When working at ones home, there may be some who are of the “do it yourself” mold. Some wrought iron projects are perfectly suited for this type of individual, especially if they are familiar with concrete, have a strong back and are artistically inclined. Information on such projects is available online through various web sites that may offer materials needed.

Finishing a wrought iron railings project will bring the satisfaction in knowing that it will last for the rest of ones life. That combined with the fact that it will never have to be done again, unless an artistic change is desire. Plan well and enjoy.

Heated Towel Rails and Cast Iron Radiators Make a Perfect Bathroom

Heated Towel Rails and Cast Iron Radiators Make a Perfect Bathroom

A warm towel is very desirable after a shower. Heated towel rails fulfill this with a note of bliss. There are numerous types of heated towel rails available, the most prevalent being electric towel warmers and hydraulic towel warmers.

Electric towel warmers:
This lineage is provided with several rails and can be attached to the wall. When switched on, it heats the towel or any other piece of clothing spread over its rails. These warmers are available in multitudinous shapes, sizes as well as finishes.

Hydraulic towel warmers:
In this variant, hot water circulates through the frame to heat the towels. It often transfers the heat to its immediate surroundings. It is considered as an element of luxury and used in large apartment complexes and hotels.

Cast iron radiators find their main application in heating systems. The air that comes in contact with the heated surface of these radiators, in turn through convection, gets heated and then circulates throughout the room/enclosed space. Hot water is used in most of the modern radiators. In order to achieve maximum efficiency, the radiators’ covers must be provided with sufficient openings.

The heat produced might reduce drastically if the valves are clogged. It is, therefore, important to bleed the valves regularly. Also, it is imperative not to allow any obstructions like curtains and furniture block the flow of heat. The heat output of cast iron radiators depends upon:

1. Ambient temperature
2. Radiator’s surface temperature
3. Surface area of the radiator

Some of the well known types are steam radiators and hot water radiators. Steam radiators, as the name suggests, use steam as their source of heat. Similarly, for hot water radiators, the heat source is hot water, the common factor between both being their primary function of heating the surrounding air.

Your Everlasting Iron Railings

Your Everlasting Iron Railings

Iron railing had been an all time favorite for the last many centuries and has never lost its popularity due to its long life. Here is some useful information about iron railings.

Traditional but still Contemporary – Iron Railings

Existence of Iron railings could be traced back at the time when industrial revolution was taking place at the end of the 16th century and beginning of 17th century. During these times, the knowledge of mining of metals was in its primitive stage, unlike today when it is considered as a science. It used to be an expensive affair, since it was the work of artisans. Only the affluent and rich people could buy the wrought iron and its railings made from iron. The welding techniques were unheard of and joining of metals was done either by heating and or by fastening or hammering together.

The railings were made from cast iron, steel or wrought iron. There was no existence of stainless steel railings in the 17th century.

Wrought Iron railings not at all have been affected by fashion. Fashions have come and gone, but the iron railings have in no way lost its popularity and will never loose its popularity in the times to come. Probably the existence of the iron railings can be considered to be more than the life of fashion.

The railings were made mostly from iron, though the affluent and the kings sometimes got railings made from metals like gold for inner railings of their mansions.

Metals for Iron Railings

Railings of Wrought Iron: It was a very tedious process to make wrought iron railings as iron is first heated to burning red and then hammer is used to give the railings the desired dimension and shape. This work was quite laborious and only a few talented craftsmen who were expert, could work on these railings of wrought iron. As there were a very few craftsmen, supply of wrought iron railings was inadequate, and as a result these were very expensive.

Railings made from Cast iron: The process of railings made from cast iron was to first liquefy the iron and then put the liquid iron into different moulds make desired shapes. Sand was made to make the molds and these molds were used for making cast on railings. These kinds of railings were quite delicate and easily broke. It was practically unfeasible to mend the cracked railing at that time. Since these were delicate, these were required to be dealt with utmost care and there were not many buyers for this kind except for the affluent people.

Railings of Mild steel: The existence of mild steel made can be traced to sometime in 18th century, after that it became instantaneously known metal to be used for railing and framework. The pieces did not need to be heated any more, instead these had to be first handled without heating and then had to be fastened with a rivet. It was a big advantage over heating process and mild steel found many uses for almost all the things including its utilization in railings.

Progress in Iron Railings

Advancement in technology in welding brought changes in the ways the iron was used in railings. Iron rods now could be bent in different shapes that were until then inconceivable. Not only it had become feasible now to join iron rods thru welding, it also reduced the price and weight without any reduction in its intensity. Apparently repair of iron rods also became much easier.

Now it is viable to make railings from plates and twist them into different shapes as per the requirement. The basic material is same but now the shape can be changed to have a new look with not much maintenance. Large quantities are achieveable with stainless steel and the stainless steel has a more elegant look and is maintenance free (other than regular cleaning).
