Selecting the Ideal Pneumatic Wheels for Your Needs

Castors come in many shapes and sizes. Choosing the right wheels for you depends on what type of things you will be transporting and on what type of terrain. It is important to take these things into account because choosing the wrong type of wheels may either destroy your flooring, or excessively rough terrain may destroy your wheels. The following outline of the basic parts of industrial castors may help you to better choose the right wheels for you.

Mountings for castors

The top parts of the wheels are called the mountings. These are the top plates which are used to fasten your wheels to your platform. These top plates come in two forms – 4 bolt holes or a single bolt hole. Top plates with four bolt holes are the most common as they spread the weight more evenly over the swivel head. Single bolt hole mountings are usually used for lighter loads. They are usually used over four bold hole mountings if the casters are to be fastened to a threaded tube.

Wheels

The most important thing to keep in mind when using pneumatic wheels is that they are specially designed for manual propulsion of up to 4mph. If you will be using your wheels for towing, this may damage your wheels or greatly reduce their lifespan. Wheels are categorized into two classes – hard tread and soft tread.

Hard tread wheels move more smoothly than soft tread wheels due to their minimal tractive resistance. However, when used indoors they can be noisy and wear out flooring much faster than soft treads. Hard tread wheels come in four types –

* Cast iron & steel – good shock resistance and long lifetime
* Nylon – high load capacity, light, clean, and minimal floor damage
* Polypropylene – good load capacity, but not as damage resistant as nylon
* Phenolic – abrasion and fracture resistant but liable to wear and chipping

Soft tread wheels are resilient, and less noisy and liable to damage your flooring than hard tread wheels, but they have a much higher tractive resistance.

* Solid rubber – basic model, good temperature resistance
* Elastic rubber – high load capacity and wear resistance
* Polyurethane – high load capacity with abrasion, tear and chemical resistance
* Pneumatic – good shock absorption, works well on rough, uneven surface
* High temperature – rubber tires suitable for use in high temperatures

Bearings

There are several types of bearings used for industrial castors, and which ones you use will depend on the application, working environment, and loading levels.

* Plain bearings – usually used with light load, intermittent applications, but vulnerable to axle wear and squeaking in wet or dusty conditions
* Roller bearings – robust and ideal for regular use with light to medium loads
* Ball journal – precision construction bearings for moderate to high radial forces
* Taper roller bearings – used with larger dimension wheels for heavy loads
* Sintered bronze – used for high temperature applications to minimise friction
* Teflon sleeve – used to reduce friction and generally utilized for lighter loads than sintered bronze

Using this information to choose the best combination of mountings, wheels, and bearings will significantly increase your productivity and increase the lifespan of your casters. Taking the time to choose the best components will also reduce your costs in the long run.

“Hold on a second Scott, while I check my meeting planner. I heard a couple of the managers talking about the Iron 883 in the hallway the other day. Yeah, I’m free let’s go! See you around 5:30 on Thursday.”

“I am tired of working endlessly in the hot sun and not having a ride to blow off some of this pressure. I need to escape! I need some adventure,” I caught myself growling out loud.

“Scott, I thought Thursday would never get here. I’ve been buried in meetings and merger talk all week. I needed to get out of here and feel alive. Don’t want to grab any dinner. Lets head straight for Adventure .

“Man, I read that the Iron 883 has a black powder-coated 883cc Evolution powertrain with black covers. It also has that (ESPFI) Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection. I heard it has a broad torque curve and give you lots of power in the city setting,” I raved as we took off toward Adventure Harley-Davidson.

“Yeah, they said it had a black chopped rear fender. You can see more of the 150mm rear tire because of the combination stop/turn/tail lights. The wheels are even black. It’s got 13-spoke cast aluminum wheels, a 19″ in the front and a 16″ in the rear. It’s all dark due to the black front forks and fender supports, fuel tank, oil tank cover, belt guard, drag style handlebar and mid mount foot controls.” Tom rambled with anxious anticipation.

“Man, you sound like you’ve been drooling over this bike as much as me. It comes with a one-piece, solo classic seat about 25.3 inches. I could ride that sweet Iron 883 all by myself. One great thing about the Iron 883 is this. If Julie decides she wants to ride we can have a passenger seat and backrest added. Sorry Tom, I couldn’t wait. I called Adventure at the beginning of the week and had a long talk with the sales crew. Tammy and Tori in financing let me know that I can get this Iron 883 and hit the road right away. Maybe this weekend.”

“Scott, what a buddy you are. Yeah, lets go to Adventure Harley-Davidson on Thursday and check out the Iron 883, ha. I can’t believe you jumped the gun and called up Adventure.”

I chuckled to myself as we pulled into Adventure Harley-Davidson. Tom was sitting there fretting like a weak puppy and I had gotten the scoop on the Iron 883 already. Yeah that’s the way to do it, I thought as I slapped Tom on the shoulder. “Come buddy lets go check out the Iron 883.”

“Hello Tom, what up,” Matt bellowed across the sales floor as he walked to meet us.

“Tom, how does he know your name,” I asked dumbfounded.

Patience good buddy, you’ll find out in time,” Tom said as he walked away from me.

Got your Iron 883 over here ready to go,” Matt informed Tom as my jaw dropped.

Why, you sneakin’ devil, you,” I blurted as Tom started to grin.

Both of our jaws dropped as we stared at Tom’s Iron 883. “All I can say is, Matt let’s talk!”

Well, Tom have fun tonight,” I said as Tom rolled away on his new Iron 883 . “I’ll ride with you Saturday when I pick mine up, buddy.”

Permanent Mold Casting Process – Types, Advantages and Disadvantages

About Permanent Mold Casting:

Permanent mold casting is a metal casting process in which metals and not sand is used as the mold material. Typically, cast iron, aluminum, copper alloys, zinc, tin and steel are used as the mold material in permanent mold casting. In this process , molds are pre-heated upto 200 degrees centigrade (392 degrees farenheit) before the metal is poured into the cavity. The metal molds heat up and expands during the pouring of hot metal and hence unlike sand castings the mold cavity does not need to be expanded but proper care must be taken to maintain the thermal balance during the casting process.

The Process:

In this form of metal casting process, metals are poured over the patterns to shape them into the required mold shapes. Unlike sand and plaster molds, permanent molds are not flexible to all types of patterns. Once the mold is set, the pattern is drawn out to reveal the coarse mold cavity. These cavities are to be machined to be made smooth. Cavity is then coated with a layer of refractory materials like clay or sodium silicate that makes the mold cavity heat resistant, allows easy ejection of the casting and increases the life of the mold. Machined gates are then attached to the mold.

For casting, the mold is first preheated and molten metal poured into the cavity and solidified. Once the metal is set, it is removed from the mold and the permanent mold is closed again to repeat the casting process. The casts take a weeks time to solidify.

Other types of permanent mold casting:

Gravity Permanent Mold Casting: It the flow of the metal into the mold using the force of gravity. Gravity pouring are of two types: static pouring where the molten metal is poured form the top and; tilted pouring where the mold is slanted and the metal is poured into the mold using a basin. Gravity permanent mold casting produces accurate casting than shell mold castings.

Low-Pressure permanent Mold Casting: In this process only very little amount of forces is used to push the metal into the mold. Low-pressure permanent mold casting process enables producing uniform castings with excellent dimensional accuracy, perfect surface finish and superior mechanical properties.

Slush Casting: Slush Casting is a special type of permanent mold casting in which molten metal is not allowed to solidify completely. After the desired wall thickness is obtained, the not yet solidified molten metal is poured out. This is useful for making hollow ornamental objects such as lamps, candlesticks, statues etc.

Applications:

Permanent mold casting process is used to cast products from iron, aluminum, magnesium, and copper based alloys. Typical permanent mold casting components includes gears, splines, wheels, gear housings, pipe fittings, fuel injection housings, and automotive engine pistons, timing gears, impellers, compressors, pump parts, marine hardware, valve bodies, aircraft parts and missile components.

Advantages:

Suitable for high volume casting ceramic
Quality of heavier casting improves with better use of tooling’s and equipment
Casted products have better tensile strength and elongation than sand castings
Mass productions can be done is a single production run, which reduces the manufacturing cost
Products have excellent mechanical properties.

Disadvantages:

High tooling cost
Short mold life; higher the pouring temperature, shorter the mold life.
Limited to low-melting-point metals

Introduction to Steel Castings

Steel casting is a kind of process which involves casting of various types of steel. Steel castings are mainly used when cast irons can’t provide enough strength and stun resistance. Steel Castings are mainly categorized into two groups as Carbon Steels and Alloy Steels:

Carbon steel is one with main alloying constituent is Carbon. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) defines carbon steel as: “Steel is considered to be carbon steel when no minimum content is specified or required for chromium, cobalt, columbium, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, tungsten, vanadium or zirconium, or any other element to be added to obtain a desired alloying effect; when the specified minimum for copper does not exceed 0.40 percent; or when the maximum content specified for any of the following elements does not exceed the percentages noted: manganese 1.65, silicon 0.60, copper 0.60.”

The term “carbon steel” may also be used in reference to steel which is not stainless steel; in this use carbon steel may include alloy steels. Steel with a low carbon content has properties similar to iron. As the carbon content rises, the metal becomes harder and stronger but less ductile and more difficult to weld. In general, higher carbon content lowers the melting point and its temperature resistance. Carbon content influences the yield strength of steel because carbon atoms fit into the interstitial crystalline lattice sites of the body-centered cubic (BCC) arrangement of the iron atoms. The interstitial carbon reduces the mobility of dislocations, which in turn has a hardening effect on the iron. To get dislocations to move, a high enough stress level must be applied in order for the dislocations to “break away”. This is because the interstitial carbon atoms cause some of the iron BCC lattice cells to distort.
