Home Built Foundry – Brass Casting
Not the best quality video on metal casting, but the info is good. Worth your time watching if you love metal casting like I do.
Can I melt/cast small amounts of copper/brass/aluminum/zinc with what I have?
I have a cast iron crucible, and a MAPP gas torch. I can get copper/zinc/brass/aluminum to melt but can I get the metal hot enough without a furnace to melt the metal? If not what cheap small additions would I need? I live in an appartment with a ground floor patio so no room to store anything big, or even medium. I am only trying to cast small shapes. (1 inch or so)
I can sometimes use a portable forge to heat the metal, would that work?
Also what fluxes for the different metals would I need?
I will borax work with aluminum? I thought it didn’t?
I have a nice concrete patio with a small dirt yard. The appartment is brick so no wood exposed.
I am doing it just to have some fun.
I don’t really have the money to take a class at this time. I am paying off college loans from 5 years of college, etc, that’s why I said cheap above.

Metal Casting Forum
I found a white vent pipe (3\”) in my mother\’s house (built in 40\’s). I was told it was aesbestos.
I definitely is metal (it pings when I tap it), but it looks like it was painted white with a flat white paint. It connects from the water closet vent, about 3′ off the floor and extends through to the roof vent. The drain/vent pipe for the water closet is 3″ cast iron w/ a 4″ closet flange.
A handyman told me, since I was working on that “stack”, that the city would make me replace that “white” pipe since it was not in code. But when I read the UPC, I could not find anywhere where it said that aesbestos drain pipe was prohibited. I did find some suggestions on how to seal it w/o replacing it. Also found some material suggesting that there is nothing wrong w/ it (not like the aesbestos dust that comes from auto car brakes..)
Does this sound like an aesbestos pipe? If so, does the UPC prohibit it? (I found nothing in the local code.)
Now that answers 4-7 are in, and I actually talked to to 5 city inspectors/supervisors (they did not visit my mom’s house)…the concensus is that it is just a painted pipe…thx everyone!!

New Toilet Flange Installation on Metal Pipe?
I have a toilet that has been raised with wood for the fact that the drain pipe sits too high above the floor(3/4″). It’s always been like this and finally want to fix it the right way. First off, what do I use to cut the pipe? Not sure how sparks and sewer gas react with each other and don’t want to find out the fun way. I’d like to keep my eyebrows. Second, does a new metal flange have a rubber o-ring or seal to seal it to the cast iron pipe or does it have to be culked or such. I’m not a newbie to plumbing but never delt with toilet drains. Wax rings are no problem to do, but like to get rid of a hack job. Thanks for any info.
One thing I forgot to mention, the wood that was used that I called a hack job, was a sheet of particle board, cut to the same shape as the bottom of the toilet. The flange is 3/4″ above the floor and is not screwed to it. It’s obvious why wax rings don’t hold for long. Thanks for the answers!

How do I remove a tubular concrete form?
I’d like to use a 20 inch ID sheet metal tube as a concrete form. The metal is thin, perhaps 3mm, but strong enough to handle the pour. Can I slip the form from the dry concrete? How do I remove the form without destroying both the form and the casting? Cylinder height is 24 inches.

What\’s a good product to refinish my claw foot tub (cast iron)?
The inside is in great condition: a few hairline scratches.
The edge is in decent condtion: 3 chips in the porcelain, only one of which goes down to the metal.
The outside is painted black but it’s wearing off.

How to get epoxy out of a mould?
I need to cast some epoxy using a metal mould. I have some serious difficulties removing the epoxy once it has cured. I have tried coating the metal with silicone oil, hair spray and Teflon (PTFE) spray. Nothing has helped. What should I use to coat the metal surface in order to easily remove the cast epoxy part?
