My 2 year old sheltie broke her leg for the second time. She had just had the metal plate taken off. The bone snapped at a hole where one of the pins had been. The 2 vets I have taken her to say casts usually don’t work, and that no vets use casts anymore. They have said I can try an external fixator (more pins, and external wires and scaffolding), or have the leg amputated. I am not convinced that the external fixator will work. She will have even more pin holes in her bone. I want to at least try a cast before I have her leg cut off.
(Her leg is currently in a soft cast put on by the vet. She is very mobile and is even starting to put a little weight on the leg when standing.)
I am still trying to find a vet (I am in west GTA near Guelph) who will cast the leg, but if not, I am looking for any suggestions on how to cast the leg myself, to at least give it a chance to heal, before proceeding with the amputation.

I have a cast iron crucible, and a MAPP gas torch. I can get copper/zinc/brass/aluminum to melt but can I get the metal hot enough without a furnace to melt the metal? If not what cheap small additions would I need? I live in an appartment with a ground floor patio so no room to store anything big, or even medium. I am only trying to cast small shapes. (1 inch or so)

I can sometimes use a portable forge to heat the metal, would that work?

Also what fluxes for the different metals would I need?

it happened when my brother dropped her. 2 bones were broken, one clean fracture, one broken. ((bone clean and on top of the other)) she needs metal plates beacause a cast will not fit.
